From Paperwork to Patients: Montefiore Collaborates with Microsoft to Reduce Physician Burnout
Implementation of DAX Copilot at Montefiore will Automate Documentation and Streamline Clinical Tasks, Giving Time Back to Clinicians and Enabling Them to Dedicate More Time to Patient Care
December 5, 2024 (BRONX, NY)
Montefiore today announced the initial roll out of DAX Copilot, part of Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare, at primary care locations across Montefiore Health System in the Bronx and Hudson Valley. The technology is part of Montefiore’s broader technology transformation to bring innovative solutions to help solve some of the most pressing challenges in healthcare. DAX Copilot automatically and securely documents care and helps perform other important tasks. It transcribes and interprets conversations and clinician personal voice notes before, during, and after patient visits, reducing time spent on documentation and enabling clinicians to spend more time focusing on patients rather than computers. By utilizing this technology, Montefiore can reduce the time clinicians spend on documentation and administrative tasks outside of working hours and improve the experience for patients and doctors.
Physician leaders from across the health system pinpointed causes contributing to administrative workload and identified potential solutions, including the ambient clinical documentation technology. Working with Montefiore’s technology teams, physician leaders evaluated potential ambient solutions and selected DAX Copilot, which is fully integrated with Epic. According to Microsoft, DAX Copilot users report a 70% reduction in feelings of fatigue and burnout.
“Upholding Montefiore’s commitment to provide innovative patient-centered care, while supporting our clinicians, requires the relentless identification and application of new technologies and platforms,” said Andrew Racine, MD, PhD, System Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Montefiore Einstein. “Implementing DAX Copilot improves the experience for doctors and patients in a patient-centered format that creates more meaningful clinical interactions while reducing administrative burden.”
The initial roll out focuses on a group of approximately 150 primary care physicians. In 2025, Montefiore plans to expand the offering to other primary care physicians and other specialties across the health system, while also continuing to release new functionalities within the product.
Providing transparency to patients and asking for their consent to use the technology during their visit is important. Montefiore will also include opportunities for patients to understand the technology and provide consent during the check-in process.
"With DAX Copilot, we’re providing a secure ambient voice AI solution based on our widely deployed Dragon platform that helps clinicians spend more focused time with patients, improve the quality of clinical notes, and, ultimately, reduce time spent on administrative activities," said Peter Durlach, Corporate Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer of Microsoft Health and Life Sciences. "By deploying DAX Copilot deeply embedded into Epic, Montefiore is integrating our generative AI technology into the way their clinicians deliver care every day."
Microsoft has deployed DAX Copilot to over 500 healthcare systems nationwide. Montefiore is proud to be one of the first to bring this to the communities they serve in the Bronx and Hudson Valley.
