Hilary I. Hertan, MD, is the Program Director of the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program. Dr. Hertan was trained by C. S. Pitchumoni, MD, a world-renowned gastroenterologist and pancreatologist who initiated and developed the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center. Dr. Hertan earned his Gastroenterology and Clinical Nutrition fellowship at the Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center in 1990. He then served as a full-time attending in gastroenterology, nutrition and internal medicine and as Chief of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, teaching clinical gastroenterology and training GI fellows in all endoscopic procedures including ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound. He was the first gastroenterologist to conduct endoscopic ultrasound in the Bronx.
Dr. Hertan became Associate Director of the GI Fellowship Program in 1995 and Division Chief of Gastroenterology in 2002 when Dr. C. S. Pitchumoni retired. Board certified in internal medicine, nutrition and gastroenterology, he is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), Fellow of The American College of Gastroenterology (FACG) and member of The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA). He is currently Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at New York Medical College. Dr. Hertan is the author of many papers, abstracts and book chapters, most of which have been co-authored with GI fellows.
The Program Director receives strong support from the outstanding faculty in the Division of Gastroenterology, the Department of Medicine and the subspecialties as well as Surgery and other disciplines and the hospital administration.
