“Diversity and inclusion are a top priority at Einstein and this award reflects our institution’s longstanding and deep dedication to these principles by our leadership and members of our Einstein community,” said Yaron Tomer, M.D., the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean at Einstein and executive vice president and chief academic officer at Montefiore Medicine. “Since its founding, Einstein has been wholly committed to social justice and to advancing equity within our campus community and beyond. We are proud of this recognition of our ongoing efforts.”

Einstein’s diversity, equity, and inclusion [DEI] initiatives encompass a wide array of programs developed by a range of offices and departments that support students, from middle and high school through medical school and postgraduate training, as well as the College of Medicine’s faculty and employees, and the local community. These include: a diversity and inclusion strategic plan for excellence that guides Einstein’s ongoing efforts to increase DEI across campus, a variety of pathway programs that encourage and support Bronx youths’ interest in careers in medicine and science, an extensive curriculum for medical students on DEI and health equity that extends over the four years, support for student groups representing various ethnic, racial, and identity groups, several department and center DEI leadership positions, and more.

“As a longtime member of the faculty, I know that Einstein is a special place, one committed to ensuring everyone is respected and supported,” said Lynne Holden, M.D., senior associate dean for diversity and inclusion and professor of medicine at Einstein and an emergency medicine physician at Montefiore. “With our office expanding and ongoing institutional backing from leadership, we will continue to innovate and grow our offerings for students, trainees, faculty, employees, and community members.”

As a recipient of the annual Health Professions HEED Award, Einstein is featured in the November/December 2023 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, publishing November 8.
