January 21, 2014
T. Byram Karasu, M.D., a recognized expert in the field of psychiatry, is continuing his life’s mission of educating others through the publication of his 21st book entitled Life Witness: Evolution of the Psychotherapist. Dr. Karasu, psychiatrist-in-chief, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Montefiore Medical Center, professor and chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and the Dorothy and Marty Silverman Chair in Psychiatry, Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, demonstrates how a young therapist can become an expert clinician, evolving from the formative phase of a novice therapist by embracing a broad education in literature, philosophy and spirituality to become a master psychotherapist.
Dr. Karasu’s book highlights the benefit of going beyond a single school of thought and incorporating techniques from multiple psychotherapeutic approaches to help the therapist themselves find the meaning and purpose of life so they can serve their patients better.
“Dr. Karasu’s insightful overview of the practice of psychotherapy gives readers an opportunity to understand the experience of a therapist and advises that they must find the meaning of life themselves before they can develop an authentic self and become someone who can guide patients through therapy,” said Andrew D. Racine, M.D., Ph.D., senior vice president and chief medical officer at Montefiore.
Dr. Karasu has four decades of clinical experience, and is knowledgeable in diverse psychotherapeutic techniques. He is the author and editor of more than 20 books and the author or co-author of more than 100 papers. Dr. Karasu is currently the Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of the American Journal of Psychotherapy and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). He has received numerous awards, including the Sigmund Freud Award and the APA’s Presidential Commendation.
Dr. Karasu’s newest book, which has received positive reviews from fellow authors, peers and professionals in the field who have described it as “profound and moving,” “penetrating and witty” and “remarkable,” analyzes existing practices and is designed to help therapists better understand and treat patients with a variety of psychiatric conditions.
