A Message from Our Chairman

Jonathan E. Alpert, MD PhD
Chair of the Department of
Psychiatry

Training the future generation of leaders in academic psychiatry and psychology is a cherished aspect of our department's mission. Graduates from the Montefiore Einstein psychiatry residency, psychology internship, and fellowship programs achieve distinguished roles locally and nationally as clinician educators, researchers, and mental health policy makers. Our extraordinary program directors and faculty are devoted to providing trainees with a robust foundation for successful, gratifying and impactful careers.

Having joined Montefiore Einstein in April 2017, I view this unique department and institution through the lens of a relative newcomer. I have been consistently impressed with the palpable commitment of this place to social justice and science, population health and innovative models of care, and camaraderie and interdisciplinary collaboration. Highly academic -- devoted to unwavering excellence in education, research and clinical care – this is a place that is also notably nurturing, humble, and grounded. Combining the urban and cosmopolitan energy of New York City with a devotion to service oriented to the vibrant communities of the Bronx and surrounding areas, this is a place with a smart, warm and inspiring vibe of its own.

Trainees from our programs develop outstanding clinical skills and familiarity with the expanding scope of established and investigational treatments through rich experiences in ambulatory child, adolescent and adult psychiatry, inpatient psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, consult-liaison psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, school based mental health, and integrated behavioral health in adult and pediatric primary and sub-specialty care.

Our Psychiatry Research Institute at Montefiore and Einstein, active collaboration with other clinical and basic science departments and centers, and a well-developed infrastructure supporting research at Montefiore Einstein furnish ever-growing research opportunities in areas ranging from health disparities to optogenetics.

Our educational programs are characterized by high yield didactics, exceptional mentorship and supervision, and far-ranging electives locally and globally tailored to the myriad goals and emerging interests of our trainees. We are committed to a well-balanced program that supports and honors the emblematic blend of science and humanism at the heart of our field.

In sum, we are proud to offer our trainees a high challenge/high support education designed to fuel their growth and hone the distinctive expertise, critical thinking and professional values they will need to play a crucial role in shaping mental health care far into the 21st century.

You are warmly invited to reach out to me, our program directors and faculty, and our community of talented trainees as you explore further.

With my best wishes during this exciting and formative time,

Jonathan E. Alpert MD PhD
