New Chief of the Division of Geriatrics Named
August 30, 2023
August 23, 2023 - Amy Ehrlich, M.D., has been appointed the new chief of the division of geriatrics, which will go into effect on September 1, 2023.
A highly accomplished geriatrician who is held in high esteem by her peers both inside and outside of Montefiore Einstein and loved by her patients, Dr. Ehrlich has played a pivotal role in the evolution and growth of the division where she has served as associate chief as well as medical director of Montefiore Home Care for the past 10 years.
Dr. Ehrlich is board certified in internal medicine, geriatrics, and hospice and palliative care. She received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School and then trained in internal medicine at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. She started her career at the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center and in 1993 joined the faculty in geriatrics at Montefiore. She’s held many different clinical, administrative, and educational leadership roles, including medical director of the geriatrics ambulatory practice and director of the geriatrics fellowship program.
Dr. Ehrlich’s research interests include screening for mild cognitive impairment and dementia in ethnically and racially diverse primary care settings and the prevention of burns and fires in older adults’ homes. In her role as medical director of Montefiore Home Care, she works with the interdisciplinary home care team to develop innovative disease-specific programs that help address challenges in transitions of care in the Montefiore network.
Dr. Ehrlich was selected by a search committee led by Montefiore Einstein’s Sofiya Milman, M.D., M.S., associate professor of medicine (endocrinology) and of genetics, after a thorough national search. She succeeds Joe Verghese, M.B.B.S., M.S., who led the division for the past 10 years.
“We are grateful to Dr. Verghese for his impressive accomplishments as chief of geriatrics and are fortunate that he will continue to be a member of the geriatrics division in addition to continuing to serve as chief of the division of cognitive and motor aging in the department of neurology, and director of the Resnick Gerontology Center at Einstein,” says Yaron Tomer, M.D., chair of the department of medicine.
“I am truly delighted to assume the role of division chief of geriatrics,” says Dr. Ehrlich. “We have an outstanding team of physicians who are devoted to improving the care of older adults in the Bronx across all sites of care. Under the inspiring leadership of Dr. Verghese, we have created new and innovative programs and expanded our research footprint. I look forward to working with the geriatrics faculty to improve and expand geriatric care, teaching, and research throughout the Montefiore Einstein network.”
“I am so pleased that Dr. Ehrlich has accepted the position of division chief of geriatrics,” says Dr. Verghese. “She is a superb clinician who brings great passion to improving the care of older patients at the individual and systems level. On a personal note, I am grateful to Amy for being a constant pillar of support during my tenure as chief and am confident that under her stewardship, the division will scale greater academic, clinical, and research heights.”
