Montefiore-Einstein Breast Cancer Expert is Elected to National Cancer Society Leadership

Joseph A. Sparano, M.D., F.A.C.P., Vice Chairman of Medical Oncology at Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care and Associate Director for Clinical Research at the NCI-designated Albert Einstein Cancer Center, has been named to the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Nominating Committee. Dr. Sparano will serve in this position from 2016-2019. Dr. Sparano will also serve as Chair of the Nominating Committee in 2018-2019.

 Founded in 1964, ASCO is the world's leading professional organization representing physicians who care for people with cancer. Priorities for the incoming leaders at ASCO will focus on efforts to improve upon quality and value in cancer care.

 “Dr. Sparano's leadership in the management of complex breast cancers and his direction of clinical research is extremely valuable to our program,” said Steven K. Libutti, M.D., F.A.C.S., director, Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care, professor and vice chairman in the Department of Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, professor in the Department of Genetics at Einstein and associate director of clinical services at AECC. “We are thrilled that he has received this honor and national recognition.”

Dr. Sparano, who is also Professor of Medicine and Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women's Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, has been an ASCO member since 1991. Dr. Sparano has served on the Scientific Program Committee and has also served as a Scientific Program Committee Track Leader on the Cancer Education Committee. He was a member of the Best of ASCO® Planning Committee and has been a faculty member at numerous ASCO meetings.
