How Leukemia Starts—Dr. Ulrich Steidl studies acute myeloid leukemia (AML). He is seeking the molecular mechanisms that turn hematopoietic stem cells into pre-leukemic stem cells—and that transform those pre-leukemic stem cells into AML’s malignant leukemia stem cells. In a paper in the September 7 online edition of Nature Medicine, he and his colleagues report that just modest dips in protein levels—which are often caused by mutations in non-protein-coding regions of DNA—may actually play major roles in causing AML and other cancers.
