Montefiore Statement on the Supreme Court Upholding Key Provision of the Affordable Care Act
June 25, 2015
Earlier today, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the Affordable Care Act will remain unchanged, and that the government can continue to subsidize health care coverage through the federal exchange in states without state exchanges. The overwhelming decision by the Supreme Court will save lives by continuing to provide vital subsidies for those who otherwise could not access the care they need.
The Obama administration estimates that 6.4 million Americans currently get financial subsidies through Healthcare.gov.
“Today was a historic victory in the effort to preserve and uphold affordable health insurance for millions,” said Steven M. Safyer, M.D., President and CEO, Montefiore Health System. “Access to health care is a human right, not a privilege. The overwhelming and clear decision by the Supreme Court to continue a policy that ensures coverage is the right thing to do. Better health care coverage leads to a healthier nation, which is a hallmark of a strong democracy. We’re pleased that the court made this decision and look forward to continuing to partner with the government and other payers on efforts to reduce health disparities in our nation and to preserve and strengthen health care in America.”
