June 7, 2017
June 7, 2017—(BRONX, NY)—Allen M. Spiegel, M.D., the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and executive vice president and chief academic officer at Montefiore Medicine, today announced that he will not seek a fourth term as dean. He will step down from his positions at the end of his current term on May 31, 2018.
In an internal letter to the Einstein community, Dr. Spiegel wrote: “It has been a privilege to serve as Dean of this great Medical School for the past eleven years, and to have played a role in its transition to become an integral part of Montefiore Medicine.”
He continued: “I am grateful to Dr. Steven Safyer, president and CEO of Montefiore Medicine, to Ruth Gottesman, former Einstein Board Chair, and to Roger Einiger, current Board Chair, for their support of Einstein throughout my tenure as Dean.”
Dr. Safyer sent a letter to the Einstein-Montefiore community, thanking Dr. Spiegel for his partnership over the past 11 years. He also noted that Dr. Spiegel lead “Einstein in its rise in the ranks of research and educational excellence,” citing the $1.67 billion in National Institutes of Health grant awards secured during his tenure.
Dr. Safyer also explained that he will be “launching a thoughtful and inclusive process with trustees, leadership, chairs, faculty and the faculty senate to recruit a new Dean over the coming months.”
