New Outpatient Practice Brings Comprehensive Eye Care to the Community
BRONX, NY (November 28, 2011) - Montefiore Medical Center's Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences today dedicated a new 5,000-square-foot, high-tech eye and vision care practice at Montefiore's North Campus. The new practice is fully equipped with the latest technology and equipment for diagnosis and treatment of virtually any eye disease or condition in adults and children.
"We have recruited a team of multi-disciplinary ophthalmology experts to provide the most advanced eye care available," said Steven M. Safyer, MD, President and CEO, Montefiore Medical Center. "The opening of this high-technology eye care center is an important step in transforming our North Campus to meet the evolving needs of the community."
The new outpatient practice is staffed by board-certified ophthalmologists from Montefiore's Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, including specialists in pediatric ophthalmology, glaucoma, cornea, retina and uveitis, refractive surgery, and oculoplastic surgery. It has spacious exam and treatment rooms and the capacity to accommodate 200 patient visits a day.
"It is wonderful to see this project completed because it enables us to provide eye care for virtually everyone in this community, from infants to the elderly," said Roy Chuck, MD, PhD, Chairman of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Montefiore. "At our North Campus practice we can treat such conditions as cataracts, diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, macular degeneration, crossed eyes, and perform surgery of all types. We look forward to serving this community and contributing to the North Campus's continued growth."
The ophthalmology practice is the first completed phase of a total modernization of the Carpenter Avenue Medical Pavilion, the Montefiore North Campus's outpatient building located adjacent to the main hospital. When the renovation is completed the building will also house satellite practices for Montefiore Orthopaedics, Neurology and Cardiology, enhancing access to these specialty services for the surrounding community.
The new ophthalmology practice at Montefiore's North Campus is located at 4141 Carpenter Avenue in the Bronx. Hours are from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For appointments and more information, call (718) 920-2020.
As one of the largest ophthalmology departments in the country, Montefiore has 29 full-time faculty, nationally recognized researchers with 13 NIH grants, and award-winning community service programs to prevent blindness. In partnership with Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore is a longstanding educational institution in the field of ophthalmology, teaching and training many of the nation's ophthalmologists.
