LGBTQ+ healthcare refers to the provision of inclusive services which are affirming and responsive to the unique health needs of individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning and other sexual and gender minorities.
Montefiore Medical Group (MMG) provides LGBTQ+ care based on an understanding that individuals who identify as such face unique healthcare needs and challenges that are often shaped by societal stigma, discrimination and marginalization. We create an environment that provides care tailored to the community’s unique needs and experiences while being respectful, supportive and affirming of the diversity of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
To provide LGBTQ+-affirmative care to our community, MMG providers create a safe and welcoming environment that fosters trust and respect by using inclusive language, asking open-ended questions and avoiding assumptions about a patient's sexual orientation or gender identity. Our providers are also knowledgeable about the specific health needs and risks of LGBTQ+ individuals, such as HIV/AIDS, mental health concerns and gender-affirming care. Our experts are prepared to address these needs in a culturally competent manner. We seek to establish trust with our vulnerable patient populations so that each individual feels their unique identity is respected, centered and supported in their healthcare journey.
Our Services
Our primary care providers play a vital role in providing comprehensive healthcare services and support to the LGBTQ+ community on their journey to an authentic, fulfilling and healthy life. Preventative healthcare is critical to overall wellness and optimum health, and this begins with regular checkups, which are essential for a healthy body, peace of mind and illness prevention.
In support of a healthy lifestyle and to promote public health, our primary care providers offer sexual health screenings and testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and help assess each individual’s risk of HIV. Preventative treatments such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) medications are prescribed as needed to help prevent HIV transmission.
MMG provides gender-affirming care and support, and our primary care providers also offer hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to support transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals during gender transition. Referrals to transgender healthcare specialists, including surgeons and mental health professionals, are also available.
