October 10, 2019
The Department of Medicine’s annual Resident/Fellow Research Symposium held on May 22, 2019, in Montefiore’s Grand Hall, featured 76 outstanding posters presented by clinical trainees, with awards going to the top 10 abstracts in the areas of clinical and basic science research, dermatology and case reports.
This year’s Research Symposium brought together residents from the three internal medicine training programs at Moses, Wakefield, and New Rochelle campuses, with the goal of enriching the training experience and creating new collaborations across Montefiore and Einstein. Fellows from the division of Dermatology, Cardiology, Endocrinology and Metabolism and other sub-specialties also presented their research.
“This was an opportunity for cross-campus sharing of medical knowledge and ongoing research projects at Montefiore,” said event organizer Dr. Johanna Daily, a Professor in the departments of Medicine (Infectious Diseases) and Microbiology and Immunology. “The residents met other residents, fellows, and faculty for networking, career development and identification of research projects.”
Following the lively poster session, keynote speaker Sameul Sigal, MD, transplant hepatologist and professor of Medicine (Hepatology), presented the keynote address on participating in a research project during medical residency.
This year’s Research Symposium judges were Drs. Yelena Averbukh, Osman Bhatty, Jamie Galen, Meredith Hawkins, Grace Kajita, Marla Keller, Aileen McGinn, Beth McLellan, Olena Slinchenkova, Jonathan Ross, and Kristin Swedish.
This year’s Mentorship Awards went to Dr. Daniela Levi, Chair of Medicine, Mount Vernon Hospital; Drs. Michal Melamed, Associate Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology and Population Health; and Nephrology Fellowship Director; Colette Knight, Associate Professor of Medicine and Clinical Site Director of Wakefield;
Drs. Yaron Tomer and Johanna Daily presented awards to the prizewinners. Winners Drs. Ross Merkin, Diego Adrianzen Herrera, Galina Glazman-Kuzaj, and Fred Cohen presented their research at the Medicine Grand Rounds on Thursday, June 6, 2019.
