Tobacco, Alcohol Use Are Leading Risk Factors for Tongue and Larynx Cancers; HPV Linked to Increase in New Cases among Young Adults in Past 10 Years

Head and neck cancers – cancers that arise in the head or neck region, including the oral cavity, nasal cavity, sinuses, lips, mouth, salivary glands, throat, or larynx (voice box) – are the sixth most common form of cancer in the United States.

Major risk factors include tobacco and alcohol use, but in the last decade another leading risk factor has emerged: the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). In fact, young non-smokers who are HPV-positive are now the fastest growing segment of the head and neck cancer population.

When detected early, treatment and survival rates for these cancers improve. The Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care and Montefiore’s Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery will offer free screenings that include a brief and painless exam by a physician, information about head and neck cancer prevention, and referrals as needed.
